There’s something very sincere about the greeting cards we send back and forth to each other. Science has shown that receiving a handwritten note or card has a great emotional impact and makes people feel special and cared about. Let’s take a look at how greeting cards improves sense of belonging in society.
How our relationships changed in our society
Let me introduce you to the term “social capital”. This term was in use from about 1890, before becoming widely used in the late 1990’s. There has been a lot of arguments wether modernisation of society or individualism is better for us as a society. The founders of sociology were convinced that industrialisation and urbanisation were transforming social relationships permanently. They observed a breakdown of traditional bonds, lost of values and alienation in society. If you ask my opinion, I think we are now more disconnected than ever. This is saddening and alarming as we also suffer from loneliness and other mental issues like never before.
Building social wealth with greeting cards
Social relationships however significant or trivial serve our social capital. Like a bank you can then add or subtract from that capital. Sending greeting cards evidently add to your love capital! Which means you improve your social structures and social attitudes and values.
You can build social capital as an individual or as a society. For a society it means improving the way humans interact, collaborate, and cooperate. In a study by Harvard political scientists, social capital theory is said to hold the power to create a culture of reciprocity, compromise, and equality. This sound healthy, don’t you think?
Greeting cards improves sense of belonging
Without social capital humans could not work together. This is because social capital is the shared values, norms, trust, and belonging that make social exchange possible. Our society, economy, institutions, and political system could not exist without social capital. Never forget to take the time to connect with others, as a result you will feel happier in life and mentally strong!
